I've known someone like you describe. The individual was like a disgusting, dirty worm hiding in an attractive, adaptable shell. Maybe their desire for power& control is so big due to high levels of testosterone and low anxiety. I googled it and it said that this causes sadism.
I'm not surprised, everyone knows one, maybe even a few. They estimate 1 in every 50 people is a full blown psychopath.
There are actually many nervous psychopaths and sadists. Low anxiety is often noted in "organised" or "high functioning" psychopathic types, but it's not a given trait. The nervous ones just tend to lack the social skills and/or physical prowess needed to "bully" and "manipulate" well, but they are no less dangerous. Look at child killers, many of them are psychopathic but they are usually very shy, nervous and non confrontational. That's why they target kids, they are too nervous and scared to take on an adult because the adult might beat them down.
Their desire for power and control is the same as everyone elses, just magnified and warped by social and genetic influence. Some are bullied and abused (social), and some are just bad seeds to begin with (genetic).
They come from two opposite ends of childhood; One is deprived of love, is beaten and starved. So he grows up detached from others and seeks the power and control that was taken from him.
The other is given alot of love and affection, spoiled, and never told "no". So he grows up with a sort of "god complex" because he has never been disciplined at all. He has been given all the power and now seeks to extend it at all costs.
But what is noticeable is that they are all very sensitive to personal slights, this shows a great deal of insecurity. Robert Hare, the man who studied psychopaths in the greatest detail stated that their main victims are themselves. As they frequently put themselves into the worst situations and end up in prison, getting beaten up, getting killed, overdosing on drugs, all sorts of stuff. Their need for power and control outweighs their common sense, they are not built to last.
Can you stop loving someone?
