I also think people need to use better privacy settings if they don't want their profiles looked at. People tend to forget that what they're posting publicly can be accessed by anyone, and I think a lot of people don't even pay attention to their privacy settings.
I've seen the comment wars you're talking about as well, and they were rampant in some of the groups I used to be in.
