I don't really understand this and am not technology savy but can someone find out who u are by an ip address if your Facebook accountis completely fake?

I would only think that they'd be able to find out if they originally knew where u live otherwise how's it possible to link an ip Addy to someone??

I had some kid on YouTube threaten me by saying that he knows where I live now because my IP address. We were arguing about something dumb. This was years ago.
Haha good luck. Even gps don’t know where the fuck I live.

Most IP addresses are given out by internet providers as dynamic addresses. What this means is the address you have today may not be the same address you will have tomorrow especially if you reboot your router. I think it is possible for an internet provider to track down the customer number and all information but they would have to have a reason to do so.

If you have a static IP address (one that is fixed) then its much easier for them to do.

If you are being targeted by professional hackers, they'll know when you sneeze. But a generic idiot on the internet, aka average joe... They can only get a rough estimate where you live. But they'd still have to search through a whole town to get to you, so don't bother. Professional hackers deal with banks, rich people and the government.

  • Unless they are skilled hackers, they can only find a general location. Hackers on Facebook are doing other things, they aren’t looking for you.
If you’re concerned, delete your FB account, it will be the best thing you ever did.

Without getting to technical, each computer has it's own IP address. when on the internet each time you send something, like making a post on facebook you send a packet of information. That info is sent to you local server, which is then sent to a server farm somewhere, which is then sent on to another until it hits a server that runs the website. The website then looks at the info, often recording some basic information about you, including you IP. Some one knowledgeable can get this info from the website by looking at it in the coded form instead of the way we normally look at it.

If a person knows your IP address they can trace the location of the computer by using any number of applications. But if you want to know a step by step way to do it on facebook look at this site.

If this is still to much for someone they could always hire a black hat to do the work.

Almost true. Computers are assigned an ip via various methods. It's not unique to a device tho. The unique identifier of a specific device is a MAC address. Knowing an IP can help in finding a host (device that assigned the IP.) but it won't find the specific location of the device.

You're safe from all but sophisticated users. Don't worry.

I did say I wasn't going to be technical, but since you want to go there. MAC Addresses are unique to the device to which they are assigned. But those devices are network interfaces like a network interface card, network adapters, LAN adapters or physical network interfaces. Basically hardware that can be replaced. It will identify a specific computer. Also no one uses MAC-48 anymore they use EUI-48.

But when we are talking about locations we are talking about assigned IP addresses. IP addresses are assigned first by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), then by five regional Internet registries (The RIR, those are the APNIC, RIPE NCC, LACNIC, AFRINIC and ARIN), then by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or private network administrator. IP addresses are assigned to all devices that are connected to its network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication, basically for host or network interface identification and location addressing. These can be assigned permanently or dynamically. Most computers have a permanent IP assignment. Now I did make an assumptions to the OP's question. I assumed they were not moving their computer around, since they didn't say anything to indicate they were.

You know what never mind. Basically anyone can find you to within 50 miles. Your ISP knows your address but that's hard to get without a court order. Someone would have to do things that are "not suggested" by the FCC to find you. So like Nikki said you're safe from all but sophisticated users.

              Much better 😊

Typically an IP will only expose the location of a service providers dhcp or router hence your 50 mile radius, which is generally correct.

All bets are off if someone has a non local carrier and a static IP (not actually permanent) through another 3rd party.

Cheers, and thank you for correcting.

And yes, a MAC address is assigned to your NIC which can of course be changed, although that doesn't happen very often.

        • It sounds like a real process to obtain information by an ip address.

I'm sure most wouldn't bother into investigating to such lengths ?

You are just asking if they can figure out it's you catfishing.

More likely you'll screw it up somehow and they'll figure it out without having to do any tech things.

Why don't you just be nice and leave them alone.

It's not that hard if you know what to do. And like I said once they know you IP address it's easy as typing it into an app.
