Take your dog to a gun range and let him fire off a few rounds.

you don't need to teach your dog understanding of what a gun is used for to go hunting, all you need is for the dog to be bombproof and not scared of the gun when it goes off

  • They can sense it if they know what it does. They won’t automatically see a object and know. My dog knows to stay away from them and gets scared when someone has one. All because my brother as a kid would shoot airsoft guns and well there was once one that accidentally hit her and she’s been scared since. Sounds like fireworks or legit gun shots make her panick super hard which kills me to see but then again I don’t want her comfortable around them either. I avoid bringing her places with loud shot noises because of it. She seriously panicks soo hard thinking she’ll get hurt. She knows the looks of them pistol rifle anything she just runs away.

As for training I would make it so he knows don’t come in front of it but to be okay with the noise. I’m sure mine would be okay with the noise if it wasn’t for her being hurt in the past so maybe try shooting it sometimes and see how he acts. And of course make sure he stays away from it. Kinda like how I taught my dog she needs to look at me and make sure I say “you can go” when I open the door because she needs permission before darting out the door. I would shut the door before she would go out and say “no” then when she would look at me I’d let her know she can. Now she always does it. Maybe you can do the same in that type of way possibly?

If he has a passion for hunting hell know what’s going on when you get one I feel. Like my dogs half beagle and she’s already got this side to her of killing small creatures. When she sees a squirrel she will go crazy and try and chase it. If they outchase her she fallows the scent to the spot they are. This has also been a pain because I’ve had bunnies before and have to keep them outdoors because I can’t trust her but also can’t blame her when she’s designed to do it. I feel like with hounds they already have this desire and the nose for it.

they may not sense that the gun can kill them just by looking at one but pointing one at it with an angered look can indicate from the angered look that they are going to do harm to the dog, therefore its flight response would kick in

My dog freaks out at any loud sudden noise, even if something like dropping some everyday object on the floor.

I think the sound of a gun going off would cause him to jump through his own asshole.

But as far as dogs knowing what a gun if for? Not likely, they would just know it is loud if they heard it go off.

Dogs usually are afraid of the gun if its pointed at them. I think its instinct

Depends on the breed of dog. If it's actually a sporting breed they can sometimes naturally know what to do to an extent, they still need training though.

A dog doesn't understand the mechanics of a gun but they understand so.ething like a stick because its within its realm of understanding.
