Can a cover of a song be better than the original?

  • I like The Ataris' cover of "Boys of Summer" way more than the original. Their version is really energetic and intense, with electric guitars shredding all over the place, whereas the original is just sort of a low-key, typical 80s song.

I also like Sixpence None The Richer's cover of "There She Goes" more than the original by The La's. Aside from using a better singer (in my humble opinion), the repetitive part of the melody is used more sparingly so it has a greater impact during the parts of the song where it does come into play.

Also, I enjoyed the Big Al (from Vocaloid) cover of "Still Alive" from Portal. I like it mostly for personal reasons, because I can picture one of my male OCs singing the song. Though it does have it's technical merits, because it's one of the better English Vocaloid songs out there since you can actually understand everything he's saying/singing.
