Stopped into a church,
I passed along the way,
Well, I got down on my knees,
And I (......) to pray,

I had a debate with a friend about this lyric and I'm curious what other people think it is. So is it 'began' or 'pretend'?

    "pretend".

    The guy went into the church to get out of the cold. Not because he's religious, but because he went for a walk to contemplate telling "her" then got a little too chilly.

    I prefer 'pretend' cos I like the feeling of that better,
    I 'began' to pray is very obvious,
    But i 'pretend' has more depth to it

    And its hard to tell from listening to the song. I suspect there are different versions with either. Thanks for replying cats.

    Maybe, "pretend". There are sites that provide song lyrics, but sometimes these "lyrics" aren't 100% correct.
