I try to make it as quick as possible and I feel bad if I didn't kill them in the first swat. As a kid, I would save grasshoppers and dragonflies from my swimming pool. If they looked only freshly drowned, I'd put them on the deck, on their back, and press their tiny thorax gently, as if to give them CPR. They would sometimes reanimate, but I doubt it was from my "CPR" and more probably I had frightened them into action.
