Breastfeeding in public

My husband and I are trying, and so I've been thinking about when we finally have a baby.
Although I do plan on breastfeeding, I would never in a million years whip out my breast for the world to see in public just to feed my baby. That's what a privacy blanket, or even pumping some breastmilk before you go out is for.
I know the excuses everyone makes.
"Well in others countries they do it, blahblahblah"
Well I don't live in those countries. I live in the US where breasts=sex. That's what I grew up on, that's how I see breasts. Is it sad? Sure, but it's there none-the-less.
With that being said though. I'm not saying that women shouldn't breastfeed their babies when out in public. Not even saying that they should have to go to a special room, or a public bathroom and do it there. But how about a little decency and just use a towel, or a little blanket or something so the rest of us don't have to see your baby sucking on your boob.
Yes yes, it's normal, it's beautiful... yes, it is, but that still doesn't mean I want to see it taking place.

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • If women can breastfeed in public then I should be able to pee in public.

    • Cute comment, but retarded. Expelling one's waste is not relatable to nourishing one's young.

  • i think its cool when mothers do it...im a 17 year old male and to me it shows confidence..i live in Australia so i guess its different here but yeh i just think its normal and shows pride in your body...and also it is kinda hot like it would turn me on but that doesnt mean sex like u said lol..

  • Its normal but use a privacy blanket, if you can't then that sucks

  • Personally, I am a little more modest so I would do it much more discreetly, but I don't have a problem with other women doing it. I don't know about you but I've got more to worry about than the possibility of catching a glimpse of a boob once in a while.

  • Have you ever seen a woman breastfeeding without covering it with a blanket or something? If she's doing it right it's pretty hard to see what she's doing, and her breast is never fully exposed since her hand or the baby's head is always in the way. The only way you'd even have a chance of seeing it is if you're a perv who was staring at her chest anyway.

I've heard that there are women who like to make a big deal out of breastfeeding, leaving their breasts out for far longer than they need to and making sure they're doing it somewhere people are especially likely to see. But I've never seen a woman acting like that and you really don't need a blanket to breastfeed discreetly in public (which is good because some babies really hate having their heads covered when they're eating, my son sure did).

  • There's no reason to cover in public if you're breastfeeding, and I would never go to the bathroom to do it. That's just unsanitary, would you wanna eat in the bathroom?

Fuck what anyones culture says, biology says that boobs = baby feeders and that's what they are. Anyone who says shit once I have kids and breast feed them will get a slap. :)

  • I agree with you. I'm glad you're choosing to breatfeed - soooo much healthier for the baby and you. I would be descreet too, since I am shy/modest. Good luck! :)

  • What's your question? Is it normal to want to cover up your boob with a towel or something when breast-feeding? Sure.

  • Get a nursing apron on the internet . Hooter Hider is one brand.

  • You have to consult with a nurse experienced in this field. She will give you tips how to cover in public while feeding which should be comfortable to you and your baby. Alternately you can use your car to feed your baby or face ooposite side of crowd or cover from a tree. There are different options to keep your privacy and make you comfortable.

  • You don't have to ogle mothers who do it. I have absolutely no problem with it.

  • RELAX!!! You are planning to have a baby. And breast feed, the best thing when that can happen.

All of the advocacy around that is just to make you feel comfortable as a woman, and mother, providing for your child.

You'll be glad people pushed the boundaries. Not for the sake of ideology, but for practicality.

    • PS and you will choose, and have a lot more spaces to choose from.

  • american morality pushing is so childish and annoying.

why is this even an issue? , you feed your baby when it needs ... no one cares about a boob , its not = sex ~ grow up your mentality... its like a shallow minded 9 year old barbie girl wrote this op.

  • I used to feel the same way, until I actually tried breastfeeding. My son absolutely refused to nurse while covered. He would cry and scream until I removed the nursing cover, privacy blanket, heck even my arm! This kid needed fresh air everywhere or he would fuss and refuse to latch. So, I nurse in public without a cover now. Immodest? No. Practical. I refuse to nurse in a bathroom just because my son won't use a cover.
