Someone comes up to you with a gun, says "I'll rape you, or splatter your head across that wall, choose one" and you choose death?
I would always choose being raped over death; I'm not so weak that I think I couldn't overcome the psychological trauma of rape and live a life of value and worth. You'd choose to never see your family, your friends, the world around you again, instead of choosing to have a terrible event happen to you which you would have to learn to deal with?
Well I don't think I'd be able to deal with it.. I know someone who's been raped and they were really hurt by it, I don't think it's something you can easily get over, she doesn't even act the same anymore.. =/
I totally agree with you that it isn't something you can easily get over.
But...
Death is something you can literally NEVER get over. You can't cope with being dead. You can't move on from being dead. You can't do anything because you are dead.
So,
Rape = a horrible thing happening to you that doesn't end your life, but will be a challenge to overcome. Rape probably won't take away your chance to be happy in the future, or to experience many wonderful things about living. It probably won't mean you can't fulfil your dreams. It is something many victims cope with and are successful despite. It's not the end.
Death = The End. Not being alive to experience anything ever again. You can't even appreciate not feeling the suffering life has to offer on occasion... because you're dead. So there are no pros. You are non-existent. There is no you. Nothing.
Think of it like this. You can choose potential pain with potential happiness, or nothing at all.
Obviously you're free to think what you will, I just want you to know why that mindset seems to strange to me :)
I'm agnostic, and at the moment have no reason to believe my actions are judged by an all powerful arbiter at the 'end' of my life. So to me, death is the end.

That seems very strange to me.

Being dead doesnt always mean "THE END" if your good, you live a great, eternal life in Heavin. But if your bad, you get tourtured in Hell.
