Some parents actually believe they are being good to their children if they can afford to give them everything they want. Maybe coz they want to be their 'friends', or they grew up poor, or the parents are too young to parent, or it's easier to stop them whining, or they're not educated about MSG etc just like people didn't initially know that nicotine is addictive.
Also if you are living in a country where obesity is quite normal, you will grow to that size too :o(

Yes, misinformation is a huge problem, and it's true the media is largely responsible for that.
