It's the responsibility of the media to be unbiased, and not push propaganda (although that's almost always not the case). But it's also the parents' obligation to protect their child and decide what's best for them, whether that's the food they eat, the TV they watch, the people they hang out with, etc.
Parents are ignorant to say Marilyn Manson made their kid violent because they saw aggressive imagery in his music video and interpreted it falsely, or that their child is clinically obese because they asked for McDonald's every day, due to seeing Ronald McDonald jumping around happily eating a Big Mac in an advertisement. That is just denial of responsibility. As long as parents have the ability to monitor their children's behavior and exposure towards such things, there should be no real problem.
From age 18*, the child becomes a consenting adult; free and able to make their own decisions in life. Before that, it's up to the parents. Sure the media is distorted and manipulated, but if that's so, why don't they simply stop consenting their young ones to it?
Even you would admit that parenting would be easier if there was no Ronald McDonald?
I think it's impossible to take the media out of anyone's life. So a parent can't simply keep their kids from kids from seeing Ronald McDonald. A majority of food ads aimed towards children are about junk food or fast food. And apparently an obese child gets 40% of his/her calorie count from snacks.
Blame the parents for not teaching the child right or wrong, not teaching them the difference between fact and fiction and not giving children any morals. Now if the child knows right from wrong and do it anyways that is on the child. Since that is just a very fucked up kid.
That's why I said *both* are responsible. The media should be a source of unbiased, facts/information. That is what needs to change in the media, but I'm also saying parents can't put all the blame on advertisements, the news etc. For example with the obese kid, they were compliant in getting him all that fast food, so it is their fault too.
I agree that profiteering is fucking everyone over, but so is ignorant parenting. It's kind of a joint operation.
Some parents actually believe they are being good to their children if they can afford to give them everything they want. Maybe coz they want to be their 'friends', or they grew up poor, or the parents are too young to parent, or it's easier to stop them whining, or they're not educated about MSG etc just like people didn't initially know that nicotine is addictive.
Also if you are living in a country where obesity is quite normal, you will grow to that size too :o(
Blame the media or blame the parents?

Yes, misinformation is a huge problem, and it's true the media is largely responsible for that.
