It's nothing to get bent out of shape over, but nor should you take it as an invitation to mess around.
It does seem like he's trying to appear mature and rational (and maybe he is just that). Maybe he's saying that he doesn't view you as a possession which would be ruined by contact with another guy. Maybe he's just very secure about who he is and his value as a person, and so he wouldn't take you doing that as an enormous personal insult.
