Face value means taking things for what someone says they are without questioning the possibility that they are being manipulated. People often choose to see things for what they want because they don't want to believe that someone close to them could in fact not have their best interests in mind, which is why it's never good to give someone complete trust. If you do nobody should feel bad for you if you get screwed over because it will only be your own fault for putting yourself in that situation. People should always be punished for stupidity because it is the only way they can learn their lesson.
If you think you have to trust anyone you should only blame yourself if he is lying. Maybe he isn't but remember what I told you in the future if things go wrong. If you leave yourself vulnerable you will suffer the consequences.
