It is not a direct implication that it doesn't work. It's more of a correlation. Most of the time you will be disappointed. Older people have more experience and they know more things. They can (ab)use this experience against you. Many times this happens. Of course it's not always true, but it is a fact that can't be denied. You ended up suffering from this, so you were tricked by one of these people. The society has some values and expectations. When they don't approve these kind of relationships, they have a reason for that. This is the reason.
