Isn't The Turn of the Screw the same movie as The Innocents, starring Deborah Kerr, which came into my head as my favourite ghost movie when I saw yr question but hadn't seen yr list .... Turn of the Screw is the Henry James short story the movie's based on, but maybe the movie had different titles in different countries? Anyway, I hired the DVD a few months ago and it still scares me even though I've seen it heaps of times.
And the original The Ghost & Mrs Muir is funny, but not scary.
Thanks, I didn't know about that, I'll check if my local library has it to borrow.
The creepiness of The Innocents still raises the hairs on the back of my neck; I must've seen it a dozen times but that scene where the dead governess appears in the reeds across the lake still makes me jump even though I know its coming.

Yes I think you're right, the storyline is the same. There is also a newer a Turn of the Screw with Colin Firth, but The Innocents was much creepier.
