I've been in the same boat, just with different drugs.
Idk how long you've been sober but the first few months of sobriety I wouldn't hang out with anyone who uses because its too easy to fall back. I had to cut contact with most of my friends for the first 3 months because talking about using was enough to get me anxious.
After you feel confident enough in yourself to stay clean i'd connect with the friend, just don't hang out with them when they are using or under the influence.
In rehab they tell you to permenantly cut ties with any user but I couldntt break these friendships I had for years. Honestly though you'll notice your friendship won't be the same, and you two will feel like you're drifting.
I hope all goes well, sobriety is a never ending struggle but its worth it.
