I say all of the above. You know it's for the best to stay away from him which is why you didn't make "hang out with him every day" an option.
I definitely think you should tell him that you can't hang out with him until he gets clean. Hopefully that will motivate him to do so by seeing your good example.
Phone calls and text sound like a possibility, but what if he starts talking about using? If you try that, do you have the strength to block that out and hang up or not respond? Maybe if you could use e-mail he would be less likely to talk about it.
Only you know how self-disciplined you are and I don't know the rules for cleaning up, so my best advice is to thoroughly think it through before you decide to contact him. Try to figure out what your mindset will change to when you talk to him/see him before you make your decision. Don't take any chances.I'm proud of you and I wish you the best.
