Battle of death

I forgot the name of the TV series, but there was a scene where people are watching from above like an audience. While below, there are two people fighting, a battle, and one must die.
I heard that this is actually true and happened in history, but every time I google it I can't find any information. Does anybody know what I'm talking about??
