Barefoot household

In our household, we pretty much run a barefoot environment. It's ok if someone wants to wear shoes, but pretty much no one in the family ever does. Pretty much when we enter the house, shoes come off. In periods of warm weather, after the kids are done with school and start summer break in late May, they are pretty much barefoot around the house and wherever else they go until school starts again in late August. I think they would go to school barefoot if they were allowed. Is this the case in other peoples' households too?

It's normal but I personally always wear slippers around the house or cheap slides in the summer.

Here in Australia, it's pretty normal to go barefoot not only in the house, but to corner delis, grocery stores and even petrol stations. I remember when I went barefoot to a servo in Canada and they stared at me like I was crazy.

I don't take my shoes off when I go to other people's houses though, not unless I'm friends with them. For some reason taking my shoes off in a strangers house (unless they ask me to) seems really rude.

I walked barefoot for a while in town a few years ago and I got looked at like I was nuts.

I lived in Holland back then.

I always just ask people what they prefer.

Hahaha yeah, the looks people give you is insane. I thought that I must have forgotten to put on pants or something... but nope, just shoes 😂

          What a time.

I don't do it anymore, somehow it's not as comfortable as it used to be.

It's funny because I am from the UK, live in Australia now, and back in the UK it's considered rude to leave your shoes on when you enter someone's house. It doesn't seem to be the case over here? I do wonder if socks are the difference - the UK is quite cold so you are almost always wearing socks, where as Australia is hot so you are almost never wearing socks. Barefoot infront of people you hardly know seems awkward...

I live in a tropical island so the norm is to go barefoot when you're indoor or wear a pair of flip flop.

Yep. Totally normal. I don’t even wear shoes going for walks in the woods or on the street. I only wear them when I actually have to, like when in a public place or there’s the possibility of needles on the ground.

I get why people wouldn't want to wear their shoes at home, but what about socks? I just wear my socks at home, it feels weird and uncomfortable not wearing anything on my feet.

Fully normal. Shoes belong next to the front door. My girlfriend usually wears slippers, or flip flops (when warm), I just walk around barefoot.

In Europe pretty much everyone just wears flip flops at home, or walks barefoot and it's normal. Wearing shoes at home is considered weird.

I am barefoot mostly in natural spaces like beaches and waterfalls. At home I wear flip flops.

Many Asian cultures do not wear shoes in the house.

I prefer not to wear shoes. It's better for your feet, generally.

It is particularly better for young children, whose feet are still developing, to not wear shoes. Apparently, they should not wear hard soled shoes until they lose the reflex that makes them curl their toes as if to grasp/hold on. I forget what it's called. It usually disappears shortly after they start to walk, IIRC.

Just don't walk on anything paved in bare feet...or the fucking road. Omg.

That's really interesting about your back. Have you considered seeing a podiatrist to help with footwear connected to backpain? It really is amazing how feet being fucked up sets offthe rest of the body.

        You should be asleep.

        I should be asleep.

        The fuck are we doing?

        Ugh.

Wow, there's a lot of hostility on here recently lol.

Anyway, I think the back pain was mostly caused by a desk job which I don't do anymore. But it is better for us to be barefoot when possible. I don't go outside barefoot unless it's on my own property. I wouldn't walk to the shops barefoot, for example. The dry skin would be killer

            That makes sense.

Honestly, I would love to tell Terrence to go walk on asphalt in 110F and see how she fares, only she seems dumb enough to actually do it. And that's how you get 2nd and 3rd degree burns.

Are you really so weak you can't walk barefoot on pavement?
          Try lava rock.
Bet you wear a helmet when you bicycle.

          There are, that's the point.

We use them, and we don't really want to not be able to be comfortable in just our socks or bare feet in our own home on our clean floors JUST because you don't take off your shoes.

I disagree. A law of diminishing returns would imply that you're putting in a lot of effort. Is it really so much effort for you to take off your shoes when you enter someone's home? Unless you have a severe physical disability I don't think law of diminishing returns is accurate.

It's not just us Europeans that have this rule. I think America is one of the few places in the world where people leave their shoes on when they enter the house.

Unless I am in bed, I always have at least slippers. the fuzzy cute kind.

It is just no matter how much one tries to keep the floor clean. it will gather dust, doggy fur, whatever.

I just wear socks or slippers inside, sometimes both.

You know, those cosy femninant ones.

Coincidentally, there's also a slipper thief in the house, at least according to my girlfriend.

I think that is creapy as shit. The only thing worse than a hostest that insists you ditch your shoes is one that is comfortable with you wearing your socks. Or bare feet withoit being washed. Jesus...

My house is like this. I live in a very hot climate so shoes just means sandals/flip flops anyway.

What's the point of wearing shoes in the house? I don't object to it if people want to in their own house but I can't see any particular benefits to it.

I've seen plenty of households do this except most of their kids are also barefoot outside in the winter. It's pretty common here, so I guess it's normal.
