Awkward question at work

Either you look like you're having a hard time emotionally or in your personal life and they care, or they've seen you under-perform in some way or let standards slip, and they're giving you the benefit of the doubt.

I think it's a good reflex to try and figure out why they said it, if you know you're not having a hard time emotionally or in your personal life.

Whether, or not it's OP's fault would depend on what it is for starters.

We all deal with issues.

The best answer I have come up with is just a general one: That we all have ups and downs in life on different issues, and at the moment I'm in one of those.

Everyone should relate to that... and you don't need to say anything about the issue (politely decline to identify the issue if they ask).

You will find that many people will give you some slack and even recommend where you can obtain other assistance (many companies have confidential programs for their employees dealing with issues).
