Atheist but wouldn't recommend it? iin?

I'm an atheist, but I encourage other poeple in my life to be religious. I don't ever explain to anyone why I'm atheist or why their religion is false. I just encourage them by sounding interested and falsely acknowledging that it is good for them. I think being religious can be good for people if it gives them a sense of purpose and keeps them out of trouble so I try NOT to convince anyone to be atheist. I wish I was religious myself but I don't believe any of it and lying to myself would be even worse. Does my perspective make sense to you? Iin?

Is It Normal?

  • I'm an atheist and I would never tell someone they should believe in religion. I don't really care too much that people are religious and I'm not the kind of person to try to "convert" someone, but I'm still a firm believer in practicing what you preach. Trying to make people believe in something that you can't is wrong in my opinion.

    • It's not that I really go outta my way to encourage religion it's more that I don't want people to leave their faith.

        • Really? If people bring it up with me I do encourage them but I don't take the initiative to seek them out and do it.

          • I find it very hard to believe that any genuine atheist would encourage religious people in their delusions. I just don't get it. Surely as an atheist you're not in favour of perpetuating religious fairy tales?

            • Not to the point that they really fuck people up. I'm against extreme religions for sure, but church once a week to make you have more of a conscience against doing bad things is fine. It guilt trips people out of doing bad shit.

  • Agnostic. I like christianity honestly they are good people on par with Buddhists. Spreading the word of god and giving food to the poor what's not to like about it. At least they aren't throwing gays off of roofs.

    • The only reason some of them don't throw gays off roofs is because the law exists (plus there's more convenient ways to kill people).

    • Giving food to the poor isn't confined to religious people and spreading the word of god if pointless

    • Amen to that!

    • How is this relavant to my post? I'm not trying to discuss religion here!

  • Yes, that's actually a good attitude you have about the whole thing. Everyone has the freedom and right to choose to believe or not to believe, and forcefully pressuring people or harshly critisizing those who don't share your views does no one any favors. I do know that many christains and other religious people have pressured and criticized athiests, and they don't like it. But, it is no better for an athiest to pressure and criticize a believer, especially if their believing has given them hope and comfort. It doesn't matter if you believe it's fake if it's giving them hope and purpose. What's the point in trying to take away their hope? How would that help you any? But, I see that you are not doing that, and that's good. I just wish that those critisizing and insulting athiests would leave the believers alone. I also wish that the extremely religious people would stop badgering non-believers and allow them to make their own decisions. As long as no one is breaking the law, let other people do whatever the hell they want.

  • I am atheist and encourage everyone to question their faith. If you allow yourself to believe in fairy tales, you are at risk for believing anything. Faith is NOT fact. Atrocities are and have been committed because people followed their faith verus following true morals. People are better people without a belief in a myth. And think of it this way—. There are about 3,000 different gods currently or ever worshipped. The only diff between me and a believer is that I believe in ONE LESS god than them. In what basis did they reject the other 2,999? Did they apply that same criteria in the one they picked (the one their parents indoctrinate in them)?

  • nothing can save people. but if u fine with feeding people illusions, or allowing them to eat illusions up like bread, then I agree. I actually believe it is very normal. I used to be atheist, but never too deeply, and now I'm Agnostic

people in the old days used to believe more. that is a thing that is certain, and I would speculate it due to the simplicity of living back then. it was much harder to learn about other religions and cultures, and even if you read it, you wouldn't be able to understand it in the same way that you understand your own culture and religion. talking about people 100+ years ago btw. the world is a changing, and has been doing so forever. but the internet only comes once

    • Yeah I just think religion can kinda keep people out of trouble, give them a sense of purpose and also give them a concience about bad things that's makes them do less bad shit.

  • Don't encourage.

Instead just lend an ear. Most people simply want to be heard and to hear themselves talk, especially religious people. If someone is religious and want to tell you about it, just let them and congratulate their faith. That's all they want. If someone is on the fence about religion, let them figure it out without persuading them and let them just speak their mind on the matter.

    • That's kinda what I meant lol. That's a form or encouragement in my book but maybe I could have worded the post better.

  • Being an atheist takes as much faith as being religious.
One side believes God made Man.
The other believes Man made God.

As of yet, neither can prove where we come from or where we go when we leave this world. It just takes speculation & faith.

    • Man didn't make God wtf??? There is no God. I think atheism is a result of lack of faith. The burden of proof is on religious cunts. Their the ones making outlandish claims. I'm over here just saying "I don't know what's right but what you think is wrong"

      • So you are saying "There is no God, someone made it up."
It's a chicken or egg argument over which came first.

  • I am a sort of atheist too. I do believe that there is a higher power. Some things just fall together. Things are meant to happen. You have a set time when you're supposed to die and if before that you almost die, something always pulls through and you make it. Etc. However, I don't believe that "god' is a man on the sky in a throne. I do believe that a person should learn every religion and THEN decide which one makes the most sense. Nobody does that though. Why do people just blindly follow their religion when they don't know anything about other religions.

  • I'm kind of an atheist myself too.
It makes perfect sense to me. I think you're pretty smart.
People are generally happier when they believe in something. And some people are not smart nor strong enough to have their beliefs questioned.
I usually like to destroy religious people with facts and logic for fun but I think that what you're doing is smarter.

    • Cool! Didn't expect someone to relate that well. I understand the desire to disprove people and show your smarter and less gullible but at the same time I don't like being that mean I guess.

  • I'm an atheist and I think the world would be better if we all were. Certainly the extremists need to turn it down.

    • Religion can be beneficial in reducing crime and extremism believe it or not,I agree there a lot of religious hypocrites who are wolves in sheep clothing but ive met true religious people who have amazed me with their character and charity and even though I'm on the fence when it comes to religious matters I always try to defend religion because of such people

      • Oh, I don't think all religious people are bad. That would be stupid. Just that I'm concerned with some of the consequences institutionalized religion has on our society.

        Comment Hidden ( show )
    • Because there have never been extremist athiests who gained power and wielded over the heads of others.

Religion helps aid the heart and mind. Too much is poison as of everything.

      • Name one?

And I'm not saying it's impossible for an atheist to be a bad person. I'm simply saying that religion won't change that - and that religion can often misguide people into doing bad things.

          • Communist states replace religion with the state - the idea is to get people to "worship" their government (that's why there's so much propaganda!). I'd argue it's at least related to religious indoctrination.
