At what point do you know you're addicted?

I don't think I have a drug abuse problem. I stay sober all week, and then on Friday/Saturday night I have three pints of beer and a few bong rips. Might not sound like a lot, but I'm pretty fucked up by then, a lot of times I'll pass out on my couch.

People have different definitions of addiction. It seems to me that any addiction is only a problem if you're incapable of coping with life without feeding it, and if the effects of the addiction start to have a negative impact on your health and your life in general.

You sound like a classic binge drinker and stoner - although three beers hardly counts as a binge.

I suggest you ask yourself if you could easily go without your beer and bong if you needed to. Imagine you were shipwrecked on desert island. Would that be what you missed most? Be aware that people who are truly addicted are often in denial, so it's possible you can't totally trust the answer you come up with. If you want to be more certain, try going without your weekly ritual for a month. If you find yourself counting down the days and itching to get back to your normal routine, then you might want to think about that.

you know your addicted when youd rather spend the money on beer and weed than clothes or items for your house. your DEFINITELY addicted if youd rather buy them than food or things for your children (if you have any) otherwise your probs not addicted almost everyone likes a piss up on the weekend

I would imagine an addict is someone who needs something on a daily basis. You might have a slight "habit" if getting stoned and drunk is your typical weekend but if you can wait THAT long, you are probably not hooked.

People will often say that they only do their poison on the weekends, only to have it develop into a 3 day, 4 day, then every day a week-thing.

But weed and beer? Obviously be careful, no matter what you do. But every one has a few pints on the weekends. And you're responsible enough to keep your weed separate from your reg. daily life - which isn't a dependency-forming drug, chemically speaking.

Not to enable, but I think you're fine.

Someone in the throes of an addiction would have difficulty in keeping employment or school commitments, would be in financial trouble, and would be losing friends and family connections as time goes on. Not to mention a constant obsession with thinking about/ scheming about etc the drug/ substance in question.
I don't think any of this applies to you. Imho you're just having a good time once a week.
I don't think you literally mean pass out, right? From what i'm reading you mean 'get sleepy or really lazy/ sleep on the couch'?

    • I get couch locked after taking bong rips, I've noticed it's about the same without drinking too. I don't want to get up and sometimes I fall asleep on the couch.

If you’re consistently doing this until you actually pass out (suddenly, involuntarily lose consciousness) that’s not good. If by “pass out” you mean decide to sleep on the couch, I don’t see what you’re doing is such a big deal.

Addiction is a term invented by the rehab industry to sell seats in their stupid AA cult meetings. Do all the drugs you want as long as you don't steal from anyone or like hurt people.
