I think they should be cutt of from 'allowance' at 14, but still be given fair spending money for when they hang out or want a bite to eat, etc. I think they should be taught to realize that being responsible is an obligation, not an option. They should still be given spending money on appropriate occasions, though.
I didn't get an allowance. My family didn't have money, really. I cooked, cleaned, and took care of my brother- my payment was the roof over my head and a bed to sleep in.
That previous comment is just how I would raise a kid if I had one.

What age did you get an allowance? Most people I knew did not get one till age 14.
