As an american, is it normal to listen to canadian radio stations?

Out of curiosity, I decided to poke around on the internet and looked up a list of Canadian radio stations. I often listen to "Classic Hits" stations as I have a weakness for 80s music and I was blown away by all these Canadian bands I never heard before. Trooper, Harlequin, Barney Bentall & the Legendary Hearts, Prism, the list goes on.

I was shocked to learn that Canada was a treasure trove of classic rock that barely reached the American market. Needless to say, I wound up adding quite a few of these "Canada exclusive" songs to my iPod. Even though these songs are nothing new to Canadians, as an American I felt like I was discovering new music even if was decades old.

Sure, I was familiar with some Canadian bands like Rush, The Guess Who and Heart but the sheer number of old Canadian rock bands that never made it big on the American market surprised me.

By the way, I actually live nowhere near Canada and actually live near San Diego.

It's probably uncommon for an American to do so, but it is completely normal.

Before the internet was a way to get music, I lived in the northwest and could get some Vancouver stations. I loved the formats and the music. I even used to watch MuchMusic when it came up on my cable. Thanks for the thought, I need to start streaming some Canadian radio stations again.
Maybe we are frustrated, wannabe Canadians?

Not surprised. Other than taxes and cold weather, Canada is the jewel of the Western Hemisphere.

Of course Canada rocks. Only idiots want to live there because of taxes and polar weather. So, tune in and rock on.

Feels good stumbling upon something like that doesn't it? Especially for someone like myself who enjoys metal which is a very explorative genre. I love finding hidden gems. Keep on your musical journey, keep discovering new things. You won't regret it.

    • My favorite band, Poets Of The Fall happens to be from Finland and is virtually unknown in the United States.

Yeah it's pretty much the only downside. You have something you're passionate about yet you got nobody else who is too so you can't flap your gums to each other. At the same time though a lot of music I listen to I'm glad that people don't know about it because I think they don't deserve to experience it unless they can appreciate it.
