  • studying art can be daunting, especially when you spend 7 days a week comparing your drawing 2 assignment that you did at 3 am the night before class to people who have mature, realized bodies of work. i have been in art school for a long time, because i love it. i have received tons of great tips to help me love art when i start to hate it, and trust me that happens often. my favorite was when my professor told me to tell the little voice in the back of my head that says "i can't do this or I'm not good enough." to shut up and go get a cup of coffee or something...

If you went into your bfa program thinking you were going to come out a millionaire, well then you might have needed to get your head checked awhile back. art school is about an investment in the present rather than the future. so while you're in it, have fun. tell teachers that say stupid shit that they are stupid, then tell them why. its funny and it gives you confidence to create your own work, not just rehash what they tell you.

you will spend four years studying the art that "rejects" the academy, yet you are learning about it in an academic context. the whole thing can't be taken seriously, but if you do art school right you can do awesome shit and meet awesome people. just keep an open mind!
