Arguing kind of provokes a panic attack...

I've never liked arguing/debating/fighting and I've never been good at it. I just prefer to let people win and move on. I have anxiety and social anxiety, so people are hard for me to deal with. I've had two people this past year that I've had to stand my foot down with - to keep them from walking all over me. One of them is the type of person who always has to have the last word and constantly interrupts and makes you look like the bad guy. I keep standing up to her (only to have her try again the next day) and afterwards, my head spins and my breathing gets faster. I think this may be panic attacks, but I can't tell. Is this normal?

Is It Normal?

  • That can be very stressful. I don't really like arguing on the web either. I always feel quite ill afterwards. I am just human though and sometimes I'll type a comment when I'm feeling a bit smart-alecky and then regret it cos I really don't want to start anything, you know?

  • You have the exact same issue as me! I am not good at arguments either. But for the most part it's normal. I have high anxiety and I've had it for quite a while, but don't feel different. IIN (It is normal). :D

  • hi! I agree with Lacrimosa. I think you should get professional advice with your doctor or counseller about the panic attacks. Something similar happened to me and they gave me few tricks to deal with bullies. You dont need to behave like them, you dont need to be agressive, just need to be assertive and say no from time to time and let them know the way you want to be treated.
    all the best

  • This sounds like a mild panic attack to me, yes.
When i was young, and even now growing into adulthood I've always had problems with panic attacks. The number one fear for alot of people is confrontation and/or public speaking.
But always explore all possibilities, for example when a person gets worked up they can have asthmatic symptoms. Check for asthma. Go to your doctor, whatever it is im sure there is help out there :)
    take care

    • Thank you for the reply. I don't feel any asthmatic symptoms when I argue with people...I had mild asthma as a baby but that was it. Anyway, I think it was a panic attack, too...it just feels weird.

      • Definately talk to your doctor. :)
I am glad you got my comment. I dont understand why its so hard to get comments on new stories :P
I posted a story and have only one comment along with my own response. It was a health problem as well and i was really hoping that somebody could help. lol.
So far i have not seen my story posted on the main page, it remains here in the "newest stories" section. Maybe you have to get a certain number of votes, or comments... i dunno.
anyway, hope you can find a solution to your problem. take care
