Religion is a system of attitudes and beliefs concerning the nature of the world, particularly concerned with metaphysical entities. Belief in an afterlife and deities which rule over realms of the afterlife are absolutely, by definition, religious ideas. The more you know!
Just because he doesn't follow the Bible; just because he doesn't call himself Christian, Muslim, Jewish, etc - does not mean he is not religious. He follows his own set of religious beliefs.
What he could have said is that he believes in religious ideals, but doesn't follow religious institutions. That may be what he meant, but that's not what he said.
So I think we think we understand what you thought I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I understood to have meant, or maybe that I understand what we thought I meant you meant to understand. Is that so hard to understand??
Are you religious?
