  • Depends on the situation. If danger is litrally just a few minutes away then I would get a bag, fill it with about 3-4 of canned food, a pan to cook the food, some form of heat to start fires (lighters etc), a bottle or two of water, a knife to defend myself, and dark clothing for when I need to get supplies at night time.
Once I'm out of direct harms way, I will then look for a place to rest (because I would be at long traveling distance) for about three to four hours. After that I will continue to travel to find a place that is least effected and noticable that has resoursed for food and water. Obviously during my travels I will stop at many other places that aren't as safe so that I can rest to move forward.
I don't have anything big that would make me lose time because of the weight of carrying it.

I would probably end up stealing a boat to find am island that has no one else living on it or very few people living on it. Either that or I would live constantly on the move.

I'm not sure if what you mean by this is that everyone is against eachother, the law is picking off people one by one, etc.

    • "3-4 of canned food"

Canned food is extremely heavy. you should not even considering carrying any food that has any moisture content. Four cans of soup would weigh as much as 30 packages of ramen noodles (just a guess, but you get the idea).

      "a knife to defend myself"

Just pray you have not brought a knife to a gunfight. For sure, the best way to deal with hostile or dangerous people is to avoid them. But if you are even remotely serious about self defense, get a gun.

Even a .22 pistol would be better than a knife, in my opinion. One .22 solid to the head, or 3-4 hollow points center-of-mass will take out most anyone. For hunting, I'd even take it over a bow. It's flatter trajectory would make it great for small game, and hitting a deer in the head with a good pistol is no more difficult than a chest shot with archery tackle. Such a weapon is very lightweight and compact, and the cartridge even more so. 500 rounds of .22 ammo would weigh about 3.5 lbs, and cost as little as $20. Something like this deserves a place in any emergency bag.

      • Realistically, of course you'd have a knife, but probably wouldn't use it as a defense weapon, unless you're well trained in such things. I don't mean "trained" because you watched Chuck Norris do it.

Definitely agree with a .22 as a primary weapon if I could choose only one, but I'd grab an older Marlin or something that has looser tolerances so that I could go through a thousand rounds without cleaning. Even my Ruger 10/22 will start to gum up after a couple hundred rounds.

Food can widely vary depending on the situation. I would depend on what brought about the apocalypse. I have assume that it's very quickly every man for himself, so I'd have just a couple hours to put together a "go" bag. Certainly some Ramen noodles, protein powder. While everyone's breaking into grocery stores and gun stores, I'd be at the Honda dealership stealing a dirtbike. I'd be sure to pick up a street-use, spark-arresting muffler....bolt that bitch on there real quick - and be gone. I'm guessing the interstate would be jam-packed initially, so I'd wait it out a couple days in an old abandoned house (several around me, no one would go there looking for food) before scooting along the abandoned cars on the highway.

I've done enough outdoors survival to get by on finding my own food. I know a few snare trap designs. Water is a big-y, but I've got a pretty good hiking filter system, so hopefully streams and creeks could supply this - and would be a good location to "find" food.

One thing I rarely see in survival packs (and I've seen a lot), is basic broad-spectrum antibiotic. And a few tubes of antibiotic ointment. You might be able to survive everything - but if you get a cut and it gets infected - you're screwed. If you get pneumonia and can't treat it, you're screwed.

Last thing is vitamins. You won't be able to get normal nutrients for an unknown amount of time. Vitamins are essential. If you eat only Ramen or protein replacements, eventually you will have vital nutrient depravation - and that's not pretty.

There are good arguments for seeking a new home in the country - or on an island - or anywhere. The most important thing to survival (to me) is to have a friend, preferably an attractive female who's got whit and kindness. You're gonna need someone to talk to eventually or you will go nuts....and it would be nice to procreate so you can start the next generation.

That's not everything in a nutshell, just a few key ideas.

      • Yes, I get what you mean. I'm pretty strong and I'm good at endurance, I would be able to carry that ammount. Besides, I was speaking on what I have in my household, I don't think I have noodles in my house at this present time, although you do give a good point that noodles would be better. I'm not sure how long noodles last for but canned foods last a long time.

I would avoid danger at all time, I would bring a knife more for killing the people in a stealthy manner if and only if I needed to. I would avoid any conflict and would only engage in conflict if there was no alternative. If it was a gun matter then I would have to be stealthy, which is why I said knife because it wouldn't make a noise and I would be more likely to survive by taking out someone silently instead of making everyone aware of my pressence. Also, a knife can come in handy for alot of things, which was one of the reasons I picked a knife.
I live in the UK, getting firearm weapons here is extremely hard, I was merely speaking of a realistic point in my position.

If I lived in anywehre but the UK then you would have a really good point, in a way, you still do have an extremely good point. But it's hard for most to get a gun in the UK. Perhaps I should of mentioned my location at first.

I agree on the bow thing, but I don't have one and it would be a while to make a proper one with arrows. I would have to do the bow thing after I got out of harms way and in a safe area.

If I did have a gun, I would use it only when really needed and would stick to a knife. Gunfire would be rather noisy and would attract even more attention. I would always have the gun ready to use, though.

I'm really good at being stealthy and silent, I think I would be better with a knife and a few stones (to distract people by making them focus on the area I fling the stone because of the noise) if needed to take down people.

        • You're right. In the UK, only the SERIOUS criminals would have guns. You probably wouldn't have to worry about a firefight too much.
