Are there any real "mad scientists" these days?

Do you think there's any real life mad scientists around nowadays?

If yes, who?? What makes them a mad scientist?

**PS: Please limit it to professional scientists (or highly skilled/knowledgeable/capable/accomplished), not your little brother who tried to graft a frog head onto a chicken body! Thank you.

  • My old Highschool science teacher. His name was Mr. Rockett (no joke). He was without doubt the closest thing to a mad scientist I have ever seen.

      • or they have secretly been here the whole time and revived their old troll s.n. to support the related topic since it has been established that there are probably only about 10 actual users here.

If ever! I'm sure there are plenty of things going on we never could imagine. Honestly, how could there not be?

There are quite a few people who consider what I want to do with my life to be mad scientist-esque. Radical life extension, engineering the human body to be radically different than what it is currently. Many people would consider these ideas to be mad, but it's what I'm planning on and going to school for.

Give me ten years and ask again.

Why not? There were mad scientists in Nazi Germany, why wouldn't there be in other parts of the world?

    • I was thinking about Nazi Germany when I made this post. Medical experiments, weapons, chemicals, drugs and stuff.

Walter White (Breaking Bad), although fictional, is sort of a mad scientist. There's got to be lots of guys in various fields of science who do shit like that.

Well honestly you can consider most of them mad. Scientists for the most do experiments on animals to figure out how to help people. Though its usually for a good case at least for us anyways. It could be considered crazy though that they show little if any concern or regret in hurting these animals though. Not that I am saying all science needs to be banned but some might consider a person a bit crazy when he is laughing on camera while torturing a pig because by torturing figured out something about people.

I think if you mean something like Dr Gang in inspector Gadget then, nope. Modern science relies more than ever on division of labour and specialised experts who master their field. No single individual could create say an intel x86-64 on his own, even if he is an Intel engineer.

Nazi Germany? IMO, mad scientists aren't just fiction, but they aren't equivalent to their fictional counterparts either. There may be no such thing as a maverick mad scientist who can build a death ray all by himself, but there must be teams of scientists who are indoctrinated into 'craziness' by their environments.

But even then, I'm sure that they're more human and less remarkable than their fictional counterparts. So much less remarkable that you could argue that they aren't really 'mad' scientists.

Its all just words; stigmas; semantics.
