Are republicans becoming too extreme?

I've noticed ever sense the Todd Akin comment about how a woman is much less likely to get pregnant from forcible rape as being very rare and now yet another republican Mourdock coming out and saying if a woman gets pregnant from rape that it's Gods will. Well I am wondering has the republican party become too extreme?

These aren't isolated comments and a lot of other republicans have made similar statements such as Sharon Angle, etc.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Abortion is never right. It to me is murdering someone who's not even born yet. How sick is that.

  • While there are extremists on the left and the right of politics, I find it highly disturbing that people such as Akin and Mourdock can say those sorts of comments and continue to be endorsed by a mainstream party. As Devyn says, if a British politician said something like that they would be forced to resign; no party would ever continue to fund someone like that.

It doesn't disturb me that there are people who believe those things about rape (okay, it disturbs me a bit but it is to be expected in a world of 7 billion people that some of them will have pretty messed up views) as much as it disturbs me that those views are considered by the Republican Party to be mainstream opinions.

If I was an American conservative I would hate the Republican Party for allowing those kinds of comments from its representatives. I honestly believe that Todd Akin's comment has sunk the Republican's chances in the Presidential election.

  • there are extreme crazy people on both sides. Just look at Obama, he has for years promoted the socialist government ideals. If he can keep enough people on welfare, he has a better chance of getting voted in and keeping the wh democrat occupied. after all i've read on Obama, I won't be surprised when this country goes socialist. I know "that can never happen here, we have a system of checks and balances", so did the germans, yet Adolf Hitler took over te country and tried to exterminate the jews. Obama wants to make this country crawl in the dirt because he thinks it has been too arrogant. He acts week, as a president, thus the arab/islamic radicals are getting more aggressive. We brought this on ourselves, we made a huge mistake electing Obama the first time. We didn't know much about him then, hopefully we've learned and won't repeat that mistake ever again.

  • What excuse of a human being said pregnancy from rape is God's will? HOW can any American vote for a party that has members that say things like that? Can you honestly imagine a Democrat coming out with that tripe? Unbelievable.

P.s. Hoping America aren't heading back to the 1960s anytime soon! (i.e. voting Romney in.) : /

  • Republicans are a bunch of malarkey

  • There are extremists on both sides of the aisle but the problem with republicans is that they have taken control of the party.

Mitt Romney has stated that if he were President, & a "personhood" amendment were to cross his desk, he would sign it. That means abortion & even some forms of birth control pills would become illegal. His running mate, Paul Ryan, believes if a child is born out of a rape, the rapist should have full parental rights. These are not at all mainstream views so they downplay them.

  • God I hate those stupid extremists. Rape is "God's will"? They make honest, regular Republicans look bad. I can't stand the racist/ homophobic ones either. They don't get the minority vote and then they complain about it. Of course they didn't get it! The stupid fucks make racist remarks! Are they gonna vote for someone who doesn't like their race?

  • I don't think it's just a ''Republican'' thing. It seems as though they are the ones making the headlines these days with this drivel.

Let's just say both sides are moronic.

  • Oh I agree, but you must realise that there are extremes on both side of the political speculum left and right.

I find the concept of "justifying" rape highly disgusting. It just victimise the victims even more and this is the last thing they need.

  • I blame all this shit on christians.

  • Both sides of the red/blue dipshit spectrum are becoming more extreme, yes... but its like watching reality TV. You know it's happening, yet it feels so fake... and disgusting.

I've transcended the left/right paradigm and want nothing to do with it anymore.

  • They're extreme but they appeal to some people. I don't know who those people are but obviously they are the people keeping them in office.

Personally, I think that some Republicans are just completely backwards and they say what they say on purpose to achieve their desires results. I know they have publicity officials and advisers that tell them what to say and I know that there is probably something going on with this bullshit that the media probably never even touches on.

  • Just from a non-American (English) view point, a large number of the republicans' viewpoints and policies seem extreme or even shocking to the rest of the developed world. If a politician were to admit this view about rape during a British election campaign then they would most likely have to resign.

  • The politician wasn't justifying rape, he was saying that if this happens it's "God's will". For example if someone was murdered, he would say it's "God's will", but the act of murder is clearly a sin in the Bible.
Not that I agree with him or not.

  • Republicans are conservative in a country that is already seen as very conservative by other countries so, to the rest of the world, many of them look like extremists. Your democrats are seen as conservative/moderate too.

The strangest thing is that Americans at large as just as moderate and open-minded as anyone else but normal Americans (with some exceptions) don't tend to gain political power.
