I disagree that there has been a change. I bet if you travelled back in time to 2010 you wouldn't notice much difference.
It feels good to make random judgements like "people are more sensitive now than two years ago" or "there are more trolls now than two years ago" but just saying those things doesn't make it true.
If there is a change, it's probably because more and more people are using the internet when they're not mature enough. Another potential cause is that internet entrepaneurs have noticed that they can make money out of warring fandoms and misanthropes etc. so they encourage that behaviour by creating theatres for them to express those negative attitudes, making money in the process.
