Are people on the internet more hateful nowadays?

Is it just me, or have people online become a lot ruder and more hateful over the last couple of years? It seems that since mid-2011, you just can't stop running into trolls, pointless arguments, obnoxious rants, warring fandoms, cyber-bullying and people who are just miserable and bitter in general.

My theory for the sharp increase in hateful attitudes recently is the fact that, over time, people have become so frustrated with the amount of unavoidable social media on the Internet and so bored with the now mundane technology of the modern world that more and more people each day are taking out their anger on as many people as possible online to let off steam. People are so sick of how monotonous Internet culture is in this decade that they are deliberately trolling people and starting arguments simply to "punish" Internet addicts.

Does anyone else feel the same way?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • I wouldn't say hateful, there are always mean people, it's just that on the internet you can say whatever you want and not have to worry about getting a black eye.

  • To an extent; people do tend to be meaner virtually because they're protected by a computer screen as well as distance in most cases. A lot of people who are mean on the internet are probably mean in person too. A friend of mine has a fatal heart condition and she got anonymous hate on Tumblr, which made me sick. I usually like Tumblr, the people there are accepting, but there are a few bullies.

  • I agree. I am always rude on is it normal but it because I am trying to be funny. Screw that don't take me seriously.

But on interesting and serious topics such as these I act mature.

Yes people are more rude. I remember internet back in 2005 - 2006. I never had problems with people until know. A week ago I was flamed to hell by some retard on an online game for using space between end of the sentence and ?

Some people just failed in life and they are trying to get some attention on the internet. I can't come up with any other logical explanation why would they do it. I sometimes wish there wasn't internet cable between me and someone so I could realize what low-life moron am I talking to.

  • No. I think it's the same. However, I do think that people are more hateful on the internet than in real life because they are kept anonymous. They have nothing to fear.

  • I disagree that there has been a change. I bet if you travelled back in time to 2010 you wouldn't notice much difference.

It feels good to make random judgements like "people are more sensitive now than two years ago" or "there are more trolls now than two years ago" but just saying those things doesn't make it true.

If there is a change, it's probably because more and more people are using the internet when they're not mature enough. Another potential cause is that internet entrepaneurs have noticed that they can make money out of warring fandoms and misanthropes etc. so they encourage that behaviour by creating theatres for them to express those negative attitudes, making money in the process.

  • I believe it applies on the IRL-world as well, people are worse nowadays

  • No. It's just that people have become more sensitive.

    • I think it is the complete opposite actually.

  • I am much meaner online than I am in person.

  • More and more socially inept people are starting to rely on the Internet to meet their their social needs.

Compared with people who have a healthy level of social interest, which corresponds with greater overall happiness and goodwill towards others, those who struggle with socializing in the real world are more egocentric, have increased dissatisfaction with life, and negativity towards others. Give these socially challenged people an anonymous voice and a virtual podium with an audience like the Internet, and you've now got a monster (aka: a know-it-all troll).

The Internet is a haven for trolls. With time, more and more of them are coming.

  • People were always hateful on the internet, let it be now or 10 years ago. Anonymity gives an opportunity of shitting people without consequences, and many people use it.

  • My theory is that because the internet has become so accessible to all walks of life there is bound to be personality clashes. Also it has become one of the main tools of expression for alot of people.

I been on IIN for over 6 years and I remembered for example we had a "troll season" during the Summer breaks when the youngies (being youngies) spend their breaks on the family PC. Now these days, because one can venture on the site from the connivence of their mobile devices, the "troll season" isn't a season no more, it is all year round.
