I'm not sure if what you're saying is true on the whole, but I do know one relevant tidbit.
Depressed people are more likely to have an accurate opinion of themselves. On looks, intelligence, charm, and everything else, depressed people rate themselves at a realistic level, whereas the control group would rate themselves consistantly higher. It's rather depressing, but it's what the study shows.
