Approaching a wild coyote

Tonight I heard coyotes yelping and barking at a woodsey type park near our home. Me and my brother went over investigate and saw 2 coyotes running about a soccer field away. We started to walk to wards them and got near a tennis area. One coyote ran in the woods and the other turned to look at us. It was very dark so we could only see the silhouette of the coyote but is was huge. We walked closer and it was about 300 yards away. Pretty darn close I must say. Than it ran. Was it smart or dangerous to approach the wild animals?

I'm always wary of dogs of any sort until I've checked them out, and they've had a chance to check me out.

Coyotes are obviously predators, and it sounds like this one had lost some of its natural fear of humans. That's not a safe combination, particularly in the dark.

I ran after a coyote once when I was drunk, but that was in suburban Las Vegas.

Why? Im not the OP but Coyotes can't do shit. they run away from people anyway and are only the size of a small to medium dog. You'd be in more danger from a male deer. have any of you even seen a coyote?

Have you ever been attacked by a medium sized dog? Coyotes have only been cited in one fatal attack in 1981 Kelly Keen, a child. But, coyotes are know to hunt in pairs and have been seen in packs.

The OP chased a scared animal into the woods at night. Chasing any wild animal is dangerous. Chasing one into the woods at night is stupid. Scared wild animals will turn and attack people. Also rabid animals are even more aggressive.

Just do an internet search and you will see that plenty of people have been attack by these canines who "can't do shit"

          "Just do an internet search..."

Uhh as you said there is only 1 report, in which it attacked a 3 year old.

Have YOU ever been attacked by a dog? What's stopping you from beating the shit out of any little thing in self defense?

One fatality. There have been many attacks.

Yes, I have been attacked by a dog. It was hard to fight when my six year old head was in it's mouth, then it shook me like a rag doll.

Even though it's not the brightest idea, it's something I probably would have done myself.

You really want to watch out if it seems tamed down or acts unafraid.

As long as you know the dangers, it's your choice. Some people scale the side of sky scrapers with no safety equipment. A few weeks ago a kid in Russia I believe, fell to his death while taking selfies on the edge of a tall sky scraper. It was his dream, and now he sleeps :)

  • Coyotes generally avoid people, they’re like wolves in that sense. But they still could attack if they feel threatened or have a den full of pups near by.

From what I've been told coyotes don't generally like dealing with people. They will do stuff like kill life stock, puppies and cats yes. However generally they shy away from people. Either way it's not smart to test fate like that. The coyotes were most likely not interested in you. They were probably stalking around looking for some prey around like a rabbit, or some stray cats.

You asked for peoples opinion. I gave mine. It's stupid.

Also how exactly were you going to get a good photo as night?

Not a good idea. It could have had rabies.
