Appreciating inner beauty? possibly? is it normal?

i've always liked unconventional things, but as i get older, i find my tastes have really changed. i've never gone for the stripper-girl look.... with the overly done, plastic looking makeup, but now i find that for me to find someone attractive, i really have to see something special about them. it can't just be a cool/punky or gothy look. i need to be able to see - cheesy as it sounds - a sould, or some sense of real beauty or humanity in their eyes. even with celebrities (few and far between though they may be... the ones with some spark of humanity or real inner-beauty). for example, my friends and i were watching some fan-made youtube vid the other day, and there were a bunch of girls that i probably would have considered hot when i was younger, but i thought they were all disgusting. then, the next vid was 4non blondes, and i realized that though she may not be classically beautiful, linda perry has a brillaint smile, and expressive eyes, and i found myself instantly attracted to her.

this does not only extend to physical appearances. i find that no matter how talented someone is, or how perfect their pitch, i really don't care for singers who lack emotion in their voice. i used to think kathleen battle was amazing, and i suppose she is, but i don't care for her music anymore. now i far prefer neil young just because you can tell he feels every word he sings.

i don't know if it's inner beauty exactly, or soul, or what it is.... but some people just have a quality that makes you think they're actually real.... actually human.... that they actually feel.... or is it just me?

I agree with you. I prefer a natural, quirkier look rather than a guy who actually TRIES to be attractive. And personality, sense of humor, and humility are of MASSIVE importance. Regardless of how physically attractive I find a person, if his personality sucks, it's over. Greed, ignorance, lack of intelligence and/or common sense, self-importance and a general lack of humanity are just disgusting to me. Slightly off topic but, I also don't like guys who dress all prim and proper and put gel in their hair. That's a huge turnoff. It has to come naturally, or something. I don't like perfect looking blond guys with blue eyes. Little things attract me to people. Some people arch their eyebrows in a certain way, or move their lips in a certain way when they talk, that just draws me in. I'm not going to say looks don't matter, because let's be honest, they do, but I'm just not into the typical "hot guy" look.

    • Without attacking this girl as she loves to do toward me on my post; I tend to agree with her. My wrist is shot so in short-speech, I am far happier with my best friend and the envy of no one over my ex that everyone wanted but acted like a *@#$@.

I totally agree! My taste has changed as well, I love Neil Young as well, he has such intensity and heart in his songs. If people find you weird because you actually have good taste, that's their fault not yours.

hmmmmmmm......... maybe that's the problem. most of my friends are guys. maybe it's normal for women to want something more, but not for men in general? i mean, i know there are exceptions to that. my very best friend is a guy, and he looks for the same qualities... but he's a rare breed.
