Apparently some college kid is killing african wildlife

Kendall Jones, a college student and cheerleader, hunts animals in Africa and posts pictures of her and her kill online. She has been hunting in Africa since the age of 13. Naturally, this upsets many people.

She's taken a picture next to a dead lion, elephant, leopard, hippo, zebra, and rhino (so far as I know). Her family pays a lot of money for her to do this. Some of the money goes toward the African government for permits, and some goes toward the farmer who owns the land that the animals are on.

According to her, the lions she kills are either old or sick and will die anyway.

The controversy stems from the fact that she kills rare animals. She says she does so for conservation (I'm thinking it's not so much the killing that helps conservation efforts, but the monetary gain the government and African people receive from her family).

Personally, I'm outraged. I tried to make this post impartial, but I'm sure my opinion comes through quite clearly.

There is also a petition on change.org trying to ban Jones from Africa.

I don't support her or her family regarding the hunting in Africa, but I also don't support people who insult, belittle, and bully this young woman because of it. If it upsets you, I encourage you to sign the petition.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts!

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • It's not like she's the only person who does this.

Does she hunt for meat? If so that's pretty normal. She shouldn't be hunting endangered animals though.
I also don't like when people kill things they don't intend to eat.

This stuff happens all the time. What I'm against is inhumane slaughter houses, but hunting is part of life.

    • Not op but No I remember hearing about this on the defranco show, she kills them for the sport, she then poses for a picture holding whatever animal she killed

      • Just because they kill them for sport doesn't mean they won't eat it. Truth is that there are hunters that DO eat lion meat. I remember someone telling me that there are some places that cook your game for you.

I also find it a bit funny how people use the "I'll eat it" excuse to justify killing animals. Fact is that most people here don't eat meat for sustenance, but to stimulate our tastebuds. If we actually wanted to end "unnecessary killing", we'd be vegan at least 90% of the time.

      • I doubt she eats them if she's only shooting old & sick animals. Sounds like great sport (sarcasm).

If she wants a sporting challenge, she should cover herself in blood and carry a spear, not a gun.

  • They could help farmers and the government without killing animals.

  • I think a better solution would be to ban all hunting for sport and enforce the law properly.

  • It's not a sport unless the animals also have guns

  • Banned from Africa? You have to be kidding me. AFRICA IS A CONTINENT. There is NO African government. It is a series of countries. And most of it isn't just one big savannah reserve.

Besides, I'm sure many of those countries have much higher priorities, like making sure their citizens don't get affected by a plague or famine. If some of those countries can't even ban exploitative corporations that result in human rights abuses, what makes you think they'll agree on banning one person out of the countless ones who do the exact same thing to non-persons? I don't think that petition will do anything, like 99.9% of all internet petitions.

I don't support sport hunting (unless it has a purpose like population control or food), but I don't think that petition will have anything returned but derision.

    • *There is at least one country in Africa (Botswana) that bans all hunting but it had to do with wildlife instead of animal cruelty. Wildlife degradation affects their people and economy.

  • Photography safaris are just as challenging(Maybe more-so) and profitable.
Doesn't make much sense to me to say "There's a majestic beast, let's see if I can kill it."
