Am I overreacting if I hate parents who give their children false hope?

  • It depends. Telling your epileptic child that you're going to call the pilot school and make them stop being mean and take you is obviously fucking stupid. But... encouraging them to have high expectations for their future is a good thing. You'd be amazed at how much a fairly average person is capable of achieving if they put the graft in and get passionate about something.

However it does require your kid to actually put the work in. For example if you have an aspiring doctor, telling your unmotivated dreamy kid that they're going to get into medical school when they can't even be bothered to do their homework and are failing biology, is pretty dumb. Telling them that they COULD get into medical school IF they worked hard enough is a better strategy.

Also some kids don't want a high pressure lifestyle at all. They want the basics out of life. That's totally fine too, as long as they are happy.
