In wars, sane people drop terrible bombs on civilians all the time. Look at the mass civilian casualties from Russian bombings in Syria. Very sane people. Mass murders. Dots connected.
How do you know they are sane people.. did you scan their brains?c: A lot of sociopaths and narcissists seem very normal and have no obvious signs of being mentally ill.
Admittedly, my observation is unsupported, and not obvious. If you're going to claim that your assertion is obvious, you have some data to collect, and some definitions to establish. At the moment, all you have is supposition. Sorry.
Narcissists and sociopaths don't have the capability to fall into the mindset required to actually serve in the army. Most of them are too self-centered to give up their individual identity and follow the orders of another person unquestioningly.
Also you forgot to factor in the devotion many have to their religion; it's quite immense and people build their entire lives around it; most of which are sane.

Being seen as a "hero" is enough for a lot of narcissists even if they have to follow orders from another.. most likely another narc.
Narcissists already see themselves as a hero; they only seek after validation to boost their own ego. They would not tolerate the demeaning nature of training, much less gain enough trust of their fellow squad members to be promoted to rank above them. Seeming arrogant tends to make Sociopaths on the other hand don't care enough about society to volunteer to protect it much less risk their lives for it.
You make the mistake of assuming the desire to kill is stronger in those who have less empathy, and even worse assuming that by killing without remorse someone you automatically prove yourself to be a sociopath. Hate and anger can allow someone to do horrible things and still not regret it, even though they may feel guilty about harming someone else.
narcissist,sociopath or another disorder.. my main point is a person who commits a horrible crime has literally problems in the brain, thus has a mental illness..period, that's not so hard to comprehend.

just look up narcissists in the military..

Correlation is not causation. Committing crime is no proof of mental illness, and mental illness won't ensure a crime is committed.
