I think that unisex bathrooms would be a good idea, although there would be a period of adjustment before everyone would be comfortable with the arrangement. It works in other countries, and could work here in the U.S. It sure would be helpful to parents who have opposite gender children.
Many males grow up with less privacy in the bathroom than females. As a kid, if I needed to pee and mom or sis were in the bathroom using the sink or the bathtub, they would tell me to come in and pee. There was only one bathroom in our home, and we shared it when we needed to. Hence, if all bathrooms became unisex overnight, it wouldn't be too hard for guys to adapt. It would be more of an adjustment for females.
I was at Disneyland back in the '90s and had to use the men's room. I walked up to the closest urinal, unzipped, and began to pee. Just as I released my pee stream, a foreign man walked in with his daughter who was about 9 or 10. He took the urinal right next to me with his daughter standing between us (no dividers). I was surprised at first that he didn't use one of the other urinals to give each of us some space, but figured if they were okay with that arrangement so was I. The girl seemed fascinated to watch both of us pee. Afterward, I thought that it really wasn't a big deal to pee with her right next to me.
Since then, there have been multiple times that I was using a urinal and dad walks in with his daughter. I just ignore them and do what I need to do. Once at a rest stop on the interstate, I walked into a men's room and dad was using a urinal with his daughter standing next to him. I had to pee, and there was only one other urinal (no dividers). I used the other urinal anyway, and neither of them seemed to care. There have been occasions when I'm at a bar that women will come into the men's room to use the stall while I'm peeing at the urinal. I've become used to it and don't mind them being there. There have been many instances where the men's room door has been propped open and the guys using the urinal are visible from outside. It's really not a big deal if other people look in and see me peeing. Everyone does it.
When we traveled to Europe 3 years ago, there were quite a few unisex bathrooms. Some were arranged that the sinks were adjacent to the urinals. It's the norm there, so I did not feel weird to walk up to the urinal next to a mom and her daughter at the sink and pee. They did not take any notice of me at all, and we did what we needed to do.
I wouldn't care in the least if all bathrooms turned unisex overnight. It might be a bit awkward at work, but eventually everyone would get used to it. No big deal!
