Afraid of toads because of a dream

When I was a little girl I had a nightmare about being chased and almost eaten by giant toads. This nightmare took place in some sort of abandoned carnival at night where I was trying to get away from these giant maybe 5ft toads. These toads also had slime oozing out of their skin and the toads were everywhere. I remember seeing some people being eaten by the toads before they cornered me that is when I woke up. Since that nightmare as a child I have had this stupid fear of toads, even frogs make me uncomfortable. I even get uncomfortable when I see a video or picture with a toad in it. That nightmare caused me to get these stupid thoughts that if I get near a toad then it will jump on me and eat my fingers or toes. I never even seen a toad in person so I don't even know if the thought of toads scares me more than actually seeing them.

Is it normal to be afraid of something as simple as a toad because of a dream?

When I was in my early twenties I used to come home at five or six in the morning half drunk from partying, and whenever I saw a frog or toad on the stoop I would make a point to stop and pet it.

A dream can make you afraid of a lot of things. But convince yourself it was a dream, nothing else. After that you can begin a desensitizing program to rid you of the fear. Get a book an frogs and toads and learn about them. Try to find a reptile park or zoo and look at them. Ask staff to show you one. After a while I bet you could hold one in your hand. It might seem impossible now but by following the little steps above I bet it will be accomplished.

After handling either it's a good idea to wash your hands. ;)

I have the same problem with spiders and it all started with a dream when I was younger. It sounds pathetic, but I quite literally revolve my life around those things.

Spiders are a common fear. Most people can't stand them and the bigger they are the more scary. All those legs I think is what does it. I have been told and have seen people hold tarantula spiders in their hands and they just sit there for the most part. I went to a reptile zoo once and saw little kids holding them. The spiders were so used to being held they just sat there and the handler would transfer them from one hand to another. The kids weren't scared because most have never been harmed by a spider. The fear is learned by people freaking out when they see a spider so the kid thinks they are dangerous so they begin to think this too.
