Addicted to adrenaline

My name is mike and i am a combat engineer for the Army Ranger Corps. I recently returned from a five year tour of Afghanistan. Now that i'm back i am having trouble focusing on school. It's not just the usual monotonic teacher its like my thinking got hazy or something. The only thing in my life that changed is the job. My wife thinks i might be addicted to the mental clarity of combat caused by adrenaline. If there is anybody who can help me i would be very thankful.

Sgt. Fischel, thank you for your service to our country. I'm enlisting in the Air Force, and will be off to BCT next year.

My father came back from a tour in Iraq in 02-03 and felt the very same as you just described. It's part of the process of returning from war; if you feel you're not in control of the feeling, please utilize the counseling resources available on base (chaplain, psychologist)...if you're not comfortable with utilizing on-base resources, go to a civilian equivalent.

But most importantly, trust yourself and your heart...and consider taking skydiving lessons or going white water rafting.

you just gotta find some other shit in your life to excite you. Become a volunteer firefighter, or do some paintball.

  • If you weren't like this before your tour then something's definitely wrong. Go see a counselor.

I was doing a bit of research on this and depression may be an element you might want to look into.
Also Adrenaline decreases the release of insulin (which reduces the effect of blood sugar) so perhaps you should exercise more in order to naturally reduce the release of insulin - which will take time but...... anyway, I hope this sorta helped

perhaps try some meditation, after that you may find that school is a bit more exciting when you compare the 2 .....
