The only way I've found to reliably dry clothes without ruining them is by letting them air dry. No matter what settings you use, the dryer will ruin most of your clothes eventually.
I dry my stuff outside on the line, and if it rains it goes on the clothes airer in the laundry room. If you're in a cold, damp part of the world then you usually need to get some air movement, and maybe some heat - space heater, fan etc.
About how many pants/jeans do you own?
