I think in today's fast paced world, people walking with earphones in their ears & eyes glued to their smartphones we forget that some people have the time to say hie to a stranger and ask how they're doing without any ulterior motive but at the same time I understand how you thought it was weird, there are creepy guys out there. Most of the time when a random talks to me I usually don't say anything back, maybe I'll smile but I always get a weird vibe. To be on the safe side I never entertain randoms, yeah it's rude but better safe than sorry.
