A random guy spoke to me at the doctor's office?

I went to the Dr, as I sit down on a chair in the waiting room, a guy about 12 feet away from me in another chair says, "Hi how are you?", smiles. I just politely smiled back. Then after I finish with the Dr and I'm walking out towards the door, the same man is talking to the receptionist but turns to me and says, "take care hun". He doesn't work there, he was a random patient. I didn't actually say anything because I didn't feel good at all (hence the dr visit) and at first, I just assumed it was someone who worked there but nope, I realized it was him.

What was this about? Kinda random...
The dude was like 30 years older than me so was in his 50s.

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Oh my gosh! Nice people! Politeness! Not normal, not normal at all...you should be carrying a tazer, or pepper spray, at the very least...you shouldn't just put up with these random sons of bitches, asking you how you're doing.

  • So, is your question whether or not it is normal for strangers to ask how you're doing or to show an interest in you? I don't think it is that abnormal, especially for someone in their 50's or if they were born in a friendly/small neighborhood where everyone greeted everyone else.

    • Yes, I was wondering if it's normal/if it happened to other people. Thanks.

  • Is it normal that someone was nice to me?
Is it normal someone took an interest in my life?

Is it normal someone was being polite for a change rather than being a self absorbed a-hole?

    YES IT'S QUITE NORMAL.

  • I think that you are reading too much into his behaviour.

  • It's normal. He was being courteous and showing consideration for a fellow human. Nothing remotely untoward about that.

  • If you live in a place where strangers are friendly to each other and are not afraid to greet each other, then you wouldn't be freaked out.
However, if you live in an area where strangers don't greet each other and keep to themselves, then of course you'll find it odd when someone you don't know greets you.

  • If you think that was weird you might be antisocial, he was just trying to be nice

  • Just to let you know, some of the other users are being sarcastic. It's very normal to start small talk with a stranger. That's when most people have small talk, really. I'm wondering where you live that it isn't common to simply say hi to strangers. I've only heard this in bad areas where saying nothing keeps you out of trouble. Either way, he was doing what people are taught to do- be polite. No harm here.

  • I think in today's fast paced world, people walking with earphones in their ears & eyes glued to their smartphones we forget that some people have the time to say hie to a stranger and ask how they're doing without any ulterior motive but at the same time I understand how you thought it was weird, there are creepy guys out there. Most of the time when a random talks to me I usually don't say anything back, maybe I'll smile but I always get a weird vibe. To be on the safe side I never entertain randoms, yeah it's rude but better safe than sorry.

  • It is not normal at all that someone was polite and kind to a stranger. This man is probably a serial rapist and meth dealer. You should stay clear of this polite older gentleman at all cost.

  • were you the only two patients in the waiting room?

    • No, there were about 9 others and he didn't say anything to them that I saw.

  • Is this the first time in your life that someone was nice to you?

Don't read too much into it. Nice people are real.

    • I guess so lol

  • I don't think it would be any more awkward than sitting in a room with someone in dead silence, and it would probably be less. In fact, I'd much rather a real person asked me about my day than an employee who was paid to pretend he gave two shits about my life.

      • I'm surprised this person went out in the world to see a doctor in the first place. I mean with all the self diagnosis and black market drugs out there, real human interactions are not well known by the youth of today. Before you know it, simply holding a door open for someone will brand you a troll.

  • He was obviously being creepy. Think about it like this. If you weren't a young attractive female, would he act the same way he did? Probably not.

  • God... "hun"...? I think that's a bit more than polite. Well, we're not sure if he does it to other people...
