Fear is nature's way of telling you to be careful.
So, as to the dark and heights, force yourself to experience them enough to get used to them. It happens faster than you think.
For example, I had to put a roof on a house by myself. I had a rickety (but reliable) ladder, and I had to carry the shingle bundles up on my head. I think there were 45 of them.
It was so hard at first. Each trip up and down took forever.
By the end of the job, I was carrying bundles 2 at a time, and when I neared the top of the ladder, if I didn't like where it was, I would jump it around like being on a 15' pogo stick.
As for the dark. There's nothing in the dark that isn't there in the light, so just satisfy yourself before you turn 'em off.
