I suppose you think life should be lived on a computer? A challenge and a little danger in life is not something to be feared, but relished. Life should be experienced, not observed!
However, I will agree with you on one point. If someone chooses, for pleasure, to go mountain climbing, trekking in bear country or, as in my case, sailing the world's oceans, they should damn well take responsibility for their choice. These multimillion dollar rescues, especially the ones that put other lives at risk, at the public's expense, are not acceptable. Time to stop the "get out of trouble free" cards and let those who choose to take risks, live or die by their own capabilities.
Nothing wrong with sailing/camping/hiking if you are into that(IM obviously not--I prefer shopping, museums and reading National Geographics) but don't be stupid enough to need to get rescued. Because the guy who got stuck in a cavern and had to chop off his own arm or leg or whatever it was deserves a Darwin award.
Nothing wrong with experiencing the fucking awesomeness nature has to offer but I live near a popular hiking trail on what these city fucks call a "mountain" (I'm from the Appalachians and live in SoCal, I trust that no more explanation is needed with you), and dumbasses love hiking up there at night and getting lost. On a trail. In the city on a trail. Bordered by two freeways. In the city. Divide by zero, this shit doesn't compute in my head.
We have rescue helicopters flying in and out of that airspace on the regular for these folks. I'm usually not too keen on government restrictions but dumb shit like this should at least warrant community service time. Maybe when they see how much they take from the community when they waste taxpayer dollars on their jackassery, they'll quit... Nah
