They would be studing us the way we would be studing a neanderthal or another primate if they were still alive and amongst us. I believe aliens are like sapiens to meanderthals. Meaning: special human breeds either artificially created in a lab or resulting from a natural selection process. Either way they are not really aliens. Just humans with a big fancy brain over a body uncapable of performing the easiest phisical labor. So they do everything with their minds and exploit us less intelligent people to do this phisical labor in their place.
Their machinery and technology allows them to push us towards a certain direction. Like, they know everything before we do. They can predict hurricanes and earthquakes and even wars before they happen.
They basically have extensive informations about pretty much everything that has been and that is and that is going to or could be. And they cracked the secret of the universe. Their minds are like supercomputers all connected to eachother, there is no individuality. And their imagination is no more just a tool to think about the impossible. They can actually run simulations based on all the data stored in their minds, and even explore each planet of the known universe through this "virtual reality" in their minds. Kind of like the matrix. Only the universe in their minds is an exact copy of the reof the one around them. So it actually is as if they are there, because the models of the planets they explore are very very detailed. They do this mostly to gather more data and achieve ultimate omniscence. Basically to discover how everything began and how it is going to end. So they look at our earth " in time" and "out of time"they can practically watch the show of the beginning of time, see our ancestors live and die, thecway we would watch movie. All simulated of course, but extremely detailed because they found out the main mathematical algorithms, a series of mathematical equations according to which everything unfolds and to which everything must respond.
Anyway we are not very interesting to them anymore.
