That's funny because i have felt the same thing (except im a girl). I often think it would be easier to date a girl even though i'm not physically attracted to them, because they understand my thinking better and i understand them better too. I also have a lot of GLBT friends, but i don't think you have to be GLBT to fit in especially if they are the nice people you say they which i know they are.
Also, totally with you with gay guys being more passionate. Straight guys are so repressed and have absolutely no fashion sense.
