prison is for like felony offenders and mores serious crime like murder, kidnaping, rape, more serious sex offenses, robbery, more serious type of assault and ect and prisons are for locking up people for a year or more, to having life and some prisons if not all have death row housed inmates and the death penalty and for jail is for people to go when they just got arrested and being processed and all that and for people on bail and bond and for more minor things if they are staying there like more minor durg offenses and driving with out a license and or driving on a suspended license and for more minor theft offenses and for DUIs depending on what happens i your case, ect and and its usually not more then a year that you can stay there and it for people and for people on trial that have no bond or bail or waiting to be sentenced.
also jail is usually county or city or things like that and jail is run usually by the county or city and prisons are the state and run by the state and state you can go from anywhere if you have to go to prison and federal prisons are federal offenders for which are usually more serious types of crime but are federals laws and they are in a state and you can go to a federal prison from anywhere if you have to go there and federal prisons are run by the government
