First I would try to notice if he has a big ego/looks arragont, that is an immediate turn off. Dark hair, wide shoulders, a warm smile and someone fairly tall would immediately catch my eye. And I know you can't really tell if someone is intelligent by just looking at them, but nevertheless someone who 'looks' intelligent would also catch my eye. Ghetto styled clothes, piercings, wife beaters (sleeveless tops) and skinny jeans would be a turn off. Keep in mind that I am only referring to first impressions, but I know that first impressions aren't always good to go by.
